Crewkerne
St.Bartholomews the 15th century Perpendicular-style parish church, built on the site of the original 9th century Saxon 'minster', is well worth a visit, as is the small Crewkerne Museum.
Also, in the 9th century, Crewkerne had its own Royal Saxon mint and derived considerable wealth from the wool trade and became an important market town en-route from London to the South West. Later it was renowned for its sail making, supplying sails for Nelsons ship 'Victory'.
Nelsons Flag Captain, Thomas Hardy, was educated at Crewkerne Grammar School, one of Englands first grammar schools.
